James Westwater

Born in 1962 in Salvador, Brazil, James Westwater majored in Design for Communication Media at Manchester Polytechnic, England between 1981 and 1984. He then worked as a graphic designer in London, before moving in 1988 to Los Angeles, where he began his artistic career. Following his move to New Mexico in 1994, he created his first mature work in 1996. Included in key exhibitions launching Santa Fe's conceptual art scene in the mid 1990s, he began showing widely after his first solo show at Brenda Taylor Gallery in New York in 1996. In 2005 a midcareer retrospective was held at Rule Gallery, Denver, after which he moved to Beacon, New York, where he has lived and worked since.
